      <image:caption>Now let’s examine a different side to the word customer.  Whereas traditionally it connotated impersonal and commoditized offerings, technology companies like Amazon have built entire business models around obsessive customer focus, and Enterprise B2B companies have launched entire departments built around Customer Success.  These companies recognize they can only be successful by making their customers successful.  They have completely aligned incentives.  This commitment to true customer success is exactly why I found myself using the word customer interchangeably with client.  At Tenger Ways, we have clients, but that doesn’t mean we can’t also be passionate about customer success.  When I was leading IT for a $5B global SaaS company, the best consultants and vendors I worked with were the ones who approached me as a partner and worked to create aligned incentives by focusing on outcomes over output.   At the end of the day, what I wanted from my partners was real, tangible, business value.  We can now compare clients and customers on a different axis: clarity on value provided.  In the customer relationship it’s easier to quantify value than with typical client relationships. As a customer, when I’m buying a product or a piece of software, I know exactly what I’m purchasing and how I’ll use it.  I can read reviews online.  There is no ambiguity in what I’m receiving.  With professional services on the other hand, it’s much harder to quantify the value received. A consulting company may have a great reputation and they may have executed a project very well for another client, but there’s no guarantee I’ll have the same experience.</image:caption>

During this phase we meet key team members, get onboarded with access to systems and collaboration tools, and most importantly we listen to and learn more about our client.  While most of our clients have similar problems, they are all unique.   We take the time to learn about our client’s culture and values, and we confirm we’re working on the right problem.  We approach this phase with humility and an unbiased mind because we firmly believe there is no such thing as one-size-fits-all when it comes to technology strategy and execution. Quantify.  The quantify phase is all about examining and documenting our client’s current state across culture and values, business processes, capabilities, and technology.  As an independent third-party, we help our clients look in the mirror and take an assessment of their current state.  While our clients hire us to help them build a future state, it’s impossible to get to where you are going without knowing where you are coming from.  Most companies grow organically and don’t have documentation covering exactly how they work.  That’s what this phase is all about and providing this written documentation is a valuable asset not just for this engagement but for the years to come. Clarify.  The clarify phase is the longest and where clients get the most value.  This is where we work on creating the future state vision.  The documents we created for current state – across culture and values, business processes, capabilities, and technology – in the previous phase are now recreated with a future state vision.  In addition to future state recommendations, we also provide tactical steps and a roadmap for achieving this vision. The client now knows where they are, where they want to go, and most importantly how to get there.</image:title>
